The Republic F-105 Thunderchief, better known as the “Thud,” was a supersonic fighter-bomber built to deliver heavy strike loads at high speed and low altitude. Originally designed during the Cold War for tactical nuclear missions, the F-105 became one of the most heavily used American strike aircraft of the Vietnam War, where it flew repeated missions against some of the most heavily defended targets in North Vietnam.

Despite its large size, the Thunderchief could exceed Mach 2 and carry a substantial bomb load, making it a powerful attack aircraft. F-105 crews faced intense anti-aircraft fire, surface-to-air missiles, and enemy fighters, suffering significant losses during the conflict. Specialized two-seat F-105F and F-105G “Wild Weasel” variants were later used to locate and suppress enemy radar and missile sites, giving the Thunderchief an important place in the development of modern electronic warfare and suppression-of-air-defense missions.
