The Fairchild C-123K Provider was a rugged tactical transport aircraft built to carry troops, cargo, and supplies into short and often primitive airfields. The C-123K improved on earlier Provider models by adding two General Electric J85 jet engines beneath the wings alongside its two radial engines, giving the aircraft better takeoff performance and additional power when operating from difficult locations.

The Provider became closely associated with the Vietnam War, where it flew countless missions delivering supplies, transporting personnel, evacuating casualties, and supporting remote bases throughout Southeast Asia. Its ability to operate from short, rough runways made it especially valuable in areas inaccessible to larger transports. The C-123 also became known for specialized missions, including aerial spraying and flare-dropping, making it one of the most versatile transport aircraft of the Vietnam era.
