The FM-1 Wildcat was a General Motors-built version of the famous Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter, produced during World War II to free Grumman for construction of newer aircraft. Rugged, compact, and carrier-capable, the Wildcat became an important fighter for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in the early years of the Pacific War.

The FM-1 differed from earlier Wildcats by carrying four .50-caliber machine guns instead of six, allowing more ammunition to be carried. It was especially well suited to escort carriers, where Wildcats flew combat air patrol, convoy protection, and close air support missions. Although eventually overshadowed by more advanced fighters, the FM-1 helped keep the Wildcat in frontline service throughout the war.
