The Beechcraft T-34 Mentor was developed from the civilian Beechcraft Bonanza and became one of America’s most successful military primary trainers. First flown in 1948, the two-seat Mentor was designed to give student pilots a dependable introduction to military flying, including aerobatics, formation work, navigation, and instrument training. The U.S. Air Force operated the T-34A, while the U.S. Navy adopted the T-34B beginning in the 1950s.

Its successful design later evolved into the T-34C Turbo Mentor, powered by a Pratt & Whitney turboprop engine and used extensively by the Navy for primary flight training. Serving for decades in the United States and with numerous foreign militaries, the T-34 helped prepare generations of pilots for increasingly advanced aircraft and became an enduring symbol of military flight training during the Cold War and beyond.
